The first virus for OpenOffice

News.com just posted a story about the first known virus for OpenOffice.  This only serves to underscore, I think, what I’ve been saying for a while.  People are going to attack what’s popular.  I believe that’s the reason that Microsoft was plagued with viruses a few years back, and why Google is now plagued with search-spam.  People like to attack the companies themselves, but this only goes to show that these guys are just victims of their own success.

Expect to see a lot more of this as time goes on, as open source software gains market share I’d be shocked if there wasn’t a huge uptick in viruses written to attack it.  On the flip side, I think Microsoft has done a commendable job of shoring up their security, they probably do it better than anybody else at this point.
