Idea #15: Register for a MySpace account

I hate MySpace.  However, everyone who's interested in the way technology is permeating society should register and use it for at least 15 minutes.  Why?  Because you need to know what the public is using, and what they're used to seeing.

People like myself and the readers of this blog who are immersed in technology on a daily basis are much more likely to be using far more cutting-edge tools for Myspacelogo_3 personal communication than MySpace.  So it was a real eye-opener for me when I registered for MySpace.  Until that point I had no idea what its users had to put up with.  It's a real dog.

The main reason I think everyone should register for an account regardless of how you feel about the product or even if you never plan to use it (I don't) is that you need to understand where the general public is coming from.  Until you go through what they went through to setup an account, you don't understand the sheer hassle that most people associate with the Internet by way of their MySpace account.  I think it's important to at least have a brief taste of the "MySpace experience" simply to relate to new Internet users who get online for the first time just to have a MySpace account.  Otherwise you won't be able to understand the mindset of and frame of reference of the next generation of Internet users.

Swallow your pride, register for an account, and gain a new appreciation for the tenacity of new Internet users who willingly put up with MySpace just for the opportunity to hang their hat in Cyberspace.
