One nice thing about Twitter

Is that it’s finally thrusting XMPP into the spotlight.  I always knew it was only a matter of time, I can’t see a scenario in which XMPP doesn’t become the realtime data transfer standard.  I for one, can’t wait.

    two things:
    1) GTalk uses xmpp too. Doesn't that count as a little bit of the spotlight?
    2) Is the mess that Twitter is in in, especially with the lack of consistent IM updates for a week or so, really a good spotlight for any associated technology. Its not really about whether xmpp is good or not, but until the Twitter ducks are more linear I'm not sure its going to carry any tech along with it.

    Hey John,

No, I think what's happening is fantastic. For one thing it's making people recognize the need for a true pubsub model, and it's really the first time that data, not just IM, has been carried over XMPP in a public way. That, to me, is the big difference–people are thinking of realtime DATA distribution instead of just MESSAGE distribution, which is a pretty big deal IMO.

The twitter architecture sucks, the XMPP support is really more tacked on from what I can tell. If they were using a true pubsub model for their internal message distribution as well I don't see how they would be having these scaling issues.
